Incident & Suspension:
Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show was suspended indefinitely by Disney’s ABC network after Kimmel made remarks during his opening monologue about the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Disney described those comments as “ill-timed and thus insensitive.”
Political & Social Backlash:
The suspension triggered intense national debate around free speech, media criticism, and political pressure. FCC Chair Brendan Carr had threatened regulatory action, including revoking broadcast licenses. Major ABC affiliate groups, including Sinclair, refused to air the show. Public reaction included criticism of Disney, consumer campaigns to cancel Disney+ subscriptions, and intervention by political figures across party lines.

Disney’s Decision to Reinstate:
After internal deliberations (involving company executives speaking with Kimmel), Disney announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would return to the air on Tuesday (September 23, 2025). While Disney stopped short of a full apology, it acknowledged that suspension was required due to the sensitive moment. Some affiliate stations—especially those owned by Sinclair—however, indicated they would continue to pre-empt the show until certain conditions are met (such as apology to Kirk’s family or other demands).
