Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints president dies at 101

On 27th September 2025, Russell M. Nelson, the president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away at the age of 101. According to church officials, Nelson passed away quietly in his Salt Lake City residence on Saturday night at around ten o’clock.

Since January 14, 2018, Nelson has been the church’s leader. During that time, he has toured 32 nations and U.S. territory and announced the opening of 200 new temples. Significant developments occurred during his tenure, such as the introduction of a global youth program for church members and the legalization of baptism for children of LGBT parents.

Nelson was a pioneering heart surgeon before his position as church head. In 1955, he conducted the first open heart surgery in Utah and wrote several textbook chapters that contributed to medical scholarship.

Nelson’s wife, Wendy, eight children, fifty-seven grandchildren, and more than 167 great-grandchildren survive him.
