He was the central focus of the Celtics dynasty, who won 11 NBA championships so over course of his 13-year career. He was indeed a five-time NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) and a 12-time NBA All-Star.
The record for most championships gained by an athlete in a North American sports league is matched by Russell and Henri Richard of the National Hockey League. In 1955 and 1956, he led the San Francisco Dons to back-to-back NCAA championships, and in 1956, he starred as the leader of the gold-medal-winning American national basketball team in the Summer Olympics. The NBA changed the title of the NBA Finals MVP Award in his honour in 2009. He got a second induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021 for his efforts as a coach.
