Before becoming governor, he won a seat in the Nigerian Senate for the Delta North Senatorial District in the national elections held in April 2011. He campaigned on behalf of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
He is also the first Anioma native to be elected governor of Delta State. On May 29, 2019, he was re-elected to serve as the governor of Delta State. He was chosen by Atiku Abubakar, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, on June 16, 2022, to be his running mate in the 2023 election.
